Each year, Americans spend hundreds of dollars preparing their taxes. While doing taxes for federal and/or state governments is a necessity (unless you really like prison), spending money to spend more money is kind of backwards.
Fortunately, you can get away with spending little to no money and still have someone else do your taxes. There are many government-sponsored programs that help millions of Americans with their taxes every year, many that you probably don’t even know about. CNBC recently featured the numerous ways you can avoid coughing up $200+ to have someone look at your W2s and 1099s, and who knows? They might even save you money this year!
If you want to get started with a free tax service, head over to the IRS website to learn more about the programs available for your income bracket and unique tax situation. You might also want to check out Free File while you’re at it to see if you qualify for free federal and/or state filing. If you’re up to it, you might want to do your own taxes and avoid the meddling of others who don’t know about your diverse income streams. Just be sure to get everything squared away in time for April 18th…or else
