Amazon’s Stock Is Down Because Trump Is President

During the run-up to the 2016 Election, Donald Trump openly spoke out against Amazon.com ($AMZN) and The Washington Post, a popular D.C.-based newspaper. Jeff Bezos, CEO and founder of Amazon, recently purchased the Post in the last few years, so news of the presidential candidate personally directing negative attention to his brands likely didn’t sit well with the tech mogul and his companies.

Fast forward to two days ago when Donald Trump became president-elect. The stock market as a whole is doing fairly well since then, but tech stocks like Amazon.com, Apple ($AAPL), and Alphabet/Google ($GOOG) are down. Investors have their own worries unique to each stock, but one thing is certain: these major tech stocks, each a leader in their own individual market, could have their business models threatened due to the pending regime change.

During his campaign for the 2016 election, Donald Trump said that Amazon.com violated antitrust laws.

He didn’t specify his claims, but Amazon.com is under close scrutiny for its eBook-selling practices by foreign regulators.

Trump also stripped The Washington Post of their press credentials during the election, and continuously spoke ill of them on the campaign trail.

Now that Trump is in office, investors are worried that he will personally see to investigating the company’s business practices.

This could include possible anti-competitive behavior in publishing and other sectors, as well as using tax havens to avoid paying billions corporate taxes.

Other investors, however, are less concerned, and are buying Amazon stock as it goes down in hopes that it increases in the future.

Trump isn’t president yet, and no one knows exactly what he’ll do when he takes office. Still, Bezos and his companies must be nervous about all the negative attention they got during Trump’s campaign, because it could end up hurting them in the near future.
